Flicks Freaks: New films releases for Dec. 18, 2014

Somboon

A documentary that took four years to film, Somboon depicts the love story of 76-year-old Somboon, an Ayutthaya native who long ago entered into an arranged marriage with Miet, a girl from his school. Although the marriage was set up by their families, Somboon did his best to make it work, and 45 years later, the couple tries to face its end after one of them is diagnosed with a terminal condition. The documentary examines a different ideal of love which once existed by letting turning the camera on some of those who were there. As Somboon believes, “We are in the same boat. We have to look out for one another.”

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies

Whether you’ve been delighted or frustrated by Peter Jackson’s return to the world of Tolkien, you’re probably going to see the final episode of Bilbo Baggin’s journey there, and possibly back again. Even if its brief, dense tale felt cynically stretched thin, “like butter scraped over too much bread.”

Stonehearst Asylum

This cinematic take on a tale by Edgar Allen Poe tells the story of Edward Newgate, a recent medical school grad, who joins a mental institution and soon finds himself attracted to one of his colleagues – though he has no initial idea of a recent, horrifying staffing change.

The Possession of Michael King

Michael King, who doesn’t believe in spiritualism, challenges the existence of the supernatural forces by making a documentary where dares to summon spirits and allow other practitioners to perform the deepest and darkest rituals. He hopes to disprove religion, spiritualism and the paranormal, but it would be a very boring movie if it all went as planned.
