The junta-led government of Gen. Prayuth Chan-ocha just keeps droppin’ prezzies on the public. Today it’s the Commerce Ministry leaning under the tree with a big shiny gift marked “To: Shoppers.”

Under it’s populism-free strategy of attempting to please everyone imaginable, the government announced today holiday megasales at major department stores from Dec. 24 to 30, something they say will help the public “save” more than THB15 billion in combined cost of living.

The campaign which will offer a discounted goods with the co-operation of major department stores, retailers and more than 10,000 7-Eleven and Family Mart stores throughout the kingdom. According to state media, “all necessities of life” will be (up to) 70 percent off.

‘Tis the season for generosity and injecting spending into the economy, so get out there and shop – if you’re not spending money, you might as well be burning it.
