Man faces one year in jail under new animal cruelty law

A man was sentenced to a one-year jail term and fined THB2,000 yesterday under the new animal cruelty law for throwing a knife at his neighbor’s dog in Nong Khai province.

The brutal attack by Kamdee Kodtha, 50, left the pet dog “Kankluay” needing over one hundred stitches after the knife hit the dog in the face on Sunday.

Kamdee claimed he did not mean to hurt the dog; he only wanted to shoo it away because it likes to chase his chicken.

Kankluay’s owner Saiyan Kamphukaew filed a police report on Monday but tried to drop the charges.

Police said it was a criminal case and denied his request.

Kamdee has also been put under probation for one year, which could mean he doesn’t serve any jail time, Morning News reported.
