Moviepalooza: New Releases for Jan. 22, 2015

American Sniper

Directed by Clint Eastwood, American Sniper tells the store of Chris Kyle (Bradley Cooper), who claimed to be most lethal sniper in US History. Tasked with protecting his fellow brother-in-arms, Kyle quickly becomes a well-known target for his enemies due to his accurate sniping. However, his real conflicts begin when he returns home and struggles with his relationship with the reality of the war versus urban life with his wife and kids.

Mortdecai

Facing a bunch of mad Russians, the British MI5 and a national terrorist, art dealer and after-hours criminal Charles Mortdecai (Johnny Depp) must travel the world with only his good looks and charm to retrieve a stolen painting rumored to have a secret code to a bank account overflowing with Nazi gold. Johnny Depp, Gwyneth Paltrow and Ewan McGregor set high expectations for this action-comedy romp.

The Boy Next Door

No, this movie is not just the male adaptation of the movie “The Girl Next Door”, but rather it takes on a more frightening approach. Noah Sandborn (Ryan Guzman) recently moves in next door to Claire Peterson (Jennifer Lopez) which she falls for shortly after a divorce. However, things take a turn when Noah becomes obsessive with Claire and causes trouble for her and her son.

Big Eyes

Set in the 1950s, Margaret Keane (Amy Adams) becomes successful due to her featuring a girl with distinctively large eyes. However the true identity of the painter was left ambiguous due signing the paintings only “Keane.” Several years later her husband takes credit for her success by claiming that he was the original artist.

The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death

Taking place 40 years after the first haunting of the Eel Marsh House, a group of children evacuated from war-torn London arrive at the house and awaken it’s spectral inhabitant. They soon become the target of the “Woman in Black,” also known as Jennette Humfrye, and must fend off her evil spirits with the help of a soldier in order to get rid of her permanently.

The Fox Lover

Without any meaningful information, not really sure what this one is. It could be about an amorous fox or someone who loves omnivorous vulpes. Just watch the trailer.

Maps to the Stars

A look into the life of a typical Hollywood family in which dad Stafford Weiss (John Cusack) is a famous TV self-help therapist while Cristina Weiss (Olivia Williams) managers their mentally-ill child-star son, Benjie (Evan Bird). Without the three knowing, daughter Agatha Weiss (Mia Wasikowska) mysteriously appears in town after being released from rehab and becomes a personal assistant to upcoming actress Havana Segrand (Julianne Moore). Agatha later befriends limo driver (Robert Pattinson) who also aspires to become a celebrity. Overall, the movie seems to be complex to understand and watching the trailer may not help much. That’s Cronenberg for you.
