2 bombs responsible for Siam blasts, 1 injured

Two explosions just after 8pm near the Siam Paragon shopping mall were caused by small, homemade bombs that caused slight injury to one passer-by.

Police said today they are searching for two suspects seen in security footage before the explosions which happened just after 8pm, causing panic and temporarily shutting the BTS Siam station.

“The explosions were caused by two pipe bombs that were controlled by digital clocks,” police Col. Kamthorn Auicharoen said. “Inside the pipes were flash powder and some nails.”

On Sunday night police had originally asserted the explosions were caused by a malfunctioning electrical transformer. A Royal Thai Police spokesman said the bombs did not seem intended to cause injury, according to the Associated Press.

“We think the intent of the bombers was not to harm anyone but was rather to cause trouble and to damage the overall mood,” Lt. Gen. Prawut Thawornsiri told The Associated Press on Sunday night. “We have not assumed that it was politically motivated but we are pursuing a few motives in our investigation.”

Although the bombs caused little damage, they were the first to hit the capital since the military seized power following months of sometimes violent anti-government protests.
