Don Mueang’s Terminal 2 project delayed another 7 months

After more than the usual delays, a THB2 billion renovation to Don Mueang International Airport’s second terminal won’t be completed until August, Airports of Thailand announced today.

The completion of the terminal is expected to boost the airport’s capacity from about 30 million passengers per year to nearly 50 million, as the once-mothballed facility has become an important piece of the national transportation infrastructure.

“From the progress we have observed so far, we are confident the terminal should be up and running by August,” Nirandra Theeranatsin, acting president of Airports of Thailand, told Bangkok Post.

Incidentally, the Post’s article also includes some helpful renderings of the new terminal’s interior, which for some reason features a World War II-era fighter plane resembling a Messerschmitt Bf 109 Junkers Ju 87 dive bomber, “symbol of German air power and the Blitzkrieg victories of 1939–1942.”

The word of another delay comes fives months after the project’s completion was last pushed back. Both Airports of Thailand and contractors were faulted at the time.

The renovation will increase the terminal’s capacity as well as improve facilities, including restrooms, according to Airports of Thailand.

Meanwhile Terminal 1 handled nearly 22 million passengers last year, despite its official capacity for 18.5 million. While Terminal 1’s aesthetic harkens to the days when Don Mueang was the capital’s sole international airport, Terminal 2 will receive a modern update.

At a future date Terminal 1 will also get its own expensive makeover.
