How to register your SIM card before losing it

Mobile phone users with prepaid SIM cards have until Jul. 31 to register them or lose them.

After the deadline, anyone who fails to do so will lose access to their data and ability to make outgoing calls, but can still receive them.

The registration period started Sunday and applies to all phone users in Thailand. Mobile users with SIM cards on month-to-month contracts do not need to worry about this as their information is already on record.

Larry Banks of Thai Tech put together information on how the millions of affected users can register their phones.

First, you’ll need your full name, ID number and phone number. To register, Thai nationals will need their ID cards and foreigners will need to bring their passports.

Subscriber registration locations can found at Big C, Tesco Lotus and 7-11 stores. Registration will soon be possible at Krungthai bank centers. Users can also register directly with their carriers such as AIS, Dtac or True at any of their store locations.

No online registration over the internet or phone will be possible. Phone users must register in person.

Tourists arriving will need to present their passports to purchase a SIM card.

Thai Tech suggests that even if you’ve provided your information previously when signing up for service, you probably still need to register.
