Immortal Love: Centenarian couple shares love advice on 85th anniversary

A Chiang Mai couple revealed their two centuries of wisdom for lasting relationships yesterday at a Valentine’s Day event organized in honor of their 85th anniversary.

Uipan and Uitip Kaewjaima, both 104, married when they were 18 and have 12 children, and more than 100 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

“What’s important is I strictly follow the Five Precepts [of Buddhism],” Uipan said. “I like to go to temple and hear the monks’ sermons. I never fight with anyone. … We also like to help other people and to be happy. We hope everyone is happy with their love.”

The Five Precepts include refraining from killing, stealing, lying, cheating and drinking alcohol.

Many youngsters have visited the couple’s remote home near the Thai-Myanmar border to ask for their blessing for Valentine’s Day.

As for his longevity, Uipan, who claims to have worked as a porter for the Japanese army during its occupation of Burma and Thailand during World War II, said he regularly exercises and refrains from smoking and drinking.

The couple’s meals mainly consist of vegetables from their garden dipped in chili paste, Khaosod English and TNN reported.
