Thailand falls in World Press Freedom Index

Thailand has fallen four places in the most recent ranking of press freedom from Reporters Without Borders.

Asia helped lead a year of “drastic decline” in global press freedom, with losses in many Asia-Pacific nations including Japan, China and the United States.

“The indicators compiled by Reporters Without Borders are incontestable,” the Paris-based group said in its announcement. “There was a drastic decline in freedom of information in 2014.”

Thailand’s press freedom ranking dropped four places to rank 134 out of the 180 countries measured in the 2015 World Press Freedom Index. The country ranks 13th among other Asian Pacific countries with Hong Kong and Singapore ranking 8th and 26th respectively.

The countries with the greatest press freedom in the region include New Zealand, Australia and Taiwan, meanwhile the countries with the least are Vietnam, China, and North Korea.

The index was measured by surveys of correspondents and journalists around the world to give insight on press freedom in their respective countries.
