Big fun writ small at ‘Dark Bar’

There’s no sign outside of Dark Bar but step inside and yep that’s got to be the place – it’s dark.

It’s not just the lighting but the ambience, which evokes a ‘90s Los Angeles goth club where a chandelier’s dazzle is lost in black-velvet darkness and “This is Halloween” is expected any moment from the sound system.

The lack of signage fits the new nightlife venue’s “underground” concept, and its aesthetic matches its fashionista owner Nodnuanwan “Nod” Tatong, who opened Dark Bar just a few shops down from her Liberty Area One shop in the Ekkamai Shopping Mall.

“I opened Dark Bar because I love the nightlife. My soul starts after 6pm,” Nod said, admitting she has no experience running a nightlife venue. “I have been going out [since] 16-years-old on-and-off till now … therefore, if I love it that much, why don’t I open my own bar?”

Dark Bar is dark and it’s also small. “Cozy” or “intimate” might be the prefered marketing-speak, but no, it’s just small. Room for a handful of tables, chairs, a DJ station and of course the titular bar, where serviceable drinks are poured at prices about what you’d expect.

In the weeks since it’s opened, the venue has had an eclectic mix of techno, new wave and hip-hop events that we’ll assume were all thematically dark sets.

Next Friday on Feb. 27, DJs Mongkorn and Vivien of Dubway will spin their way through an evening of house, techno and the customary bass, presumably with a little darkness mixed into the broth.
