The erection of a new commercial building in the Ari area is raising eyebrows for its familiar shape.
Built as the new headquarters for Pruksa Real Estate, the Pearl Bangkok on Phahonyothin Road’s design is inspiring a strong reaction with some long before it its construction is completed next year.
“It looks like a dick,” is the most-repeated comment or inference made online, some of which note it also includes squat structures suggestive of “stones” to accompany the “pillar.”
However Pruksa insists it’s not a monument to their peen, but instead represents Thailand’s position as the “pearl of the Andaman Sea.”
“Thailand is like the pearl of the Andaman Sea,” CEO Thongma Vijitpongpun told Manager. “After AEC comes in effect, Thailand will be the center of business.”
Despite those assurances, many say it reminds them of London’s infamous “The Gherkin” building, or 30 St Mary Axe.

The 25-story building is said to cost THB2.5 billion and is expected to be complete next year.
