Phuket to launch multilingual signs to clarify confusing beach rules

An example of what the signs might look like. Approval of the final version is still pending.

In a move to clean up Phuket’s beaches, the island is preparing to place multilingual graphic signs at its beaches to clarify the confusing rules that dictate what people can do on the sand.

The draft of the sign, which tells people what they can and can’t do on the beach, was revealed in a meeting held by The Beach Protection Unit Monday.

Officials also plan to make flyers to hand out to tourists.

For example, in the designated “clean beach zone”, which will take up 90 percent of the sand, beach-goers can bring beach mats as well as beverages and light snacks.

In the special zones, beach-goers are also permitted two additional options: they may bring umbrellas and chairs and use a massage service.

Eating a full meal, smoking, littering, and selling food are strictly prohibited anywhere on the beach.

The signs have been translated into five languages: Thai, English, Chinese, Russian, and Korean
