Traffic tickets may get teeth under proposed law

A day may come when traffic tickets are for more than wiping your nose.

Looking to put some muscle into limp enforcement of traffic laws, police officials have proposed an amendment that would suspend a vehicle’s use if tickets go unpaid.

The proposed law has been sent to the junta-appointed legislature for consideration, according to Royal Thai Police spokesman Prawuth Thavornsiri.

Lax enforcement and easily bribed police are factors often cited in the lack of accountability contributing to unusually dangerous road conditions in Thailand.

Thavornsiri said there are hundreds of known locations where drivers routinely break rules without fear of reprisal, including riding motorcycles onto forbidden overpasses and parking illegally.

Under the proposed rules, repeat offenders and motorists with unpaid tickets could see their vehicle’s registration suspended and renewals denied.

In a novel concept, tickets will include printed deadlines to pay the penalty, which will be possible through a number of channels including at 7-Eleven, Thai PBS reported.
