Police cleared of blame for gambling dens, metro police chief says

A number of metropolitan police officials pulled from their regular duties following army raids of Bangkok gambling dens have been cleared and reinstated.

The metro police chief said the officers were cleared of wrongdoing following an internal investigation which began Thursday after they were blamed for negligence following army raids on illegal casinos at locations in areas including Don Mueang and Lat Phrao.

The transfers and investigations only came after a series of repeated raids by military, according to The Nation. Since seizing power last year, the military has launched a number of crackdowns that have affected sources of income for police, such as brothels and casinos.

However top metro cop Lt. Gen. Sriwara Ransibrahmanakul said that while officers may not have been vigilant, they were not to blame. His subordinate, deputy police chief Itthiphol Phiriyaphinyo, said the police actually participated in the raids alongside soldiers.
