Lrn2Swim: Parents warned of drowning danger

Poor swimming skills contribute to the drowning deaths of more than three children each day in Thailand, officials reported yesterday.

With many schools set to go on break from March through May, health officials sought to warn families to be vigilant and enroll their children in swimming courses, as most deaths happen during that time.

The Office of Disease Prevention and Control said it estimates an annual average of 1,243 children die from drowning, mostly affecting boys 5 to 9.

Only 23 percent of children under 15 are believed able to swim and few are trained in how to help others at risk of drowning.
