Australian who killed man at nightclub freed on bail

ABOVE: Few details are visible in security camera footage captured early Wednesday outside the Tai Pan nightclub on Phuket where a fatal stabbing involving an Australian expat occurred.

An Australian man who killed a nightclub worker in a brawl outside a nightclub on Phuket was released on bail yesterday.

Two days after his arrest, Mark Pendlebury was released on a THB500,000 bail against the wishes of the family of the deceased, 26-year-old Sanya Khluewaengmon, after he was determined not to be a flight risk due to his longstanding local connections.

In an interview with Phuketwan, 59-year-old Pendlebury said was angry over the senseless beating of a disabled Danish vet when he saw a fight underway outside the Tai Pan nightclub and decided to get involved.

After Sanya, who worked as club security, told him to stop filming the incident, Pendlebury claims he was pushed to the ground and believed he was going to die as a group of men “stomped” him.

He said driving the 20-centimeter blade he was carrying on him into Sanya and ending his life was an act of self defense.

Police said they are seeking more witnesses to establish what happened. Phuketwan concludes that distant, grainy footage of the incident “supports [Pendlebury’s] account of what happened.”
