Smash some worthy burgers at MBK

COCONUTS HOT SPOT — Another big burger has launched in Bangkok, this time at the sixth floor food court of MBK Center. Smashed Burgers is grilling up not only its namesake, but also a variety of dogs and milkshakes.

Sitting at the counter watching the food being prepared has the feel of being in a small town classic American diner, albeit one with a large number of Russian tourists.

The burger they serve is 110 grams of high quality, nicely seasoned ground chuck with a variety of topping options.  The signature Smashed Burger (THB330) comes crowned with cheddar, bacon, jalapeños, fried onions, tomatoes and the usual mayo/ketchup mix served on a deli-fresh bun.

While we like the simplicity of the operation and the “smashing” concept, the burger is a bit too oil-retentive for our tastes.  One bite into this scrumptious bad boy and a spring of grease erupts onto the plate.  May we suggest smashing the patty just a little bit harder and releasing that demon spew back to the depths of the fiery grill below?

A burger’s best friend here is labeled “Cajun String Fries” (THB70), which look and taste suspiciously like the same frozen crinkle-cut pommes you get in any market, which is fine, of course, but they could include a few more for price, and should serve proper Heinz rather than the sugary Roza imitation crap.

This burger has been SMASHED!

The thick and frosty Ice Cream Milkshakes (THB120), on the other hand, will get no complaints.  Served as classic Vanilla, Chocolate or Strawberry flavored, they are nearly worth the crowded escalator ride up to the sixth floor alone. Certainly a better alternative to the food court’s Est Cola, to say the least.

If you’re craving a burger at MBK, Smashed is obviously a better move than the golden arches downstairs, but it needs a little work around the edges before it becomes a destination.
