A family flick kind of week: New releases for March 26

X+Y

Nathan (Asa Butterfield aka Ender’s Game kid) is a socially awkward teenager who happens to be really good at math. He gets selected to be on the British team where they compete in the International Mathematics Olympiad. During the competition, he meets a girl from the Taiwanese team and they fall in love despite him not having any social skills.

Paddington

Another one of those movies with talking animals living in the real world. (see: Alvin & the Chipmunks, Homeward Bound, etc) However, this one doesn’t look half bad, as it’s mother-Fing Paddington after all, the cross-generational classic tale of a Peruvian bear who travels all the way to London alone in search for a new home. Why does he go to London? I have no idea.

Home

From the same people who made “The Croods” and “How to Train Your Dragon” comes a story about an obnoxious alien banished from his planet who lands on Earth to make friends. As is often the case with all-star ensemble movies – the cast counts Rihanna, Steve Martin, Jennifer Lopez and Jim Parsons – this one seems like a classic recipe for disappointment.

Robot Overlords

Couldn’t they have thought of a better name for this movie? This movie is about Earth being taken over by robots from a distant galaxy. Sean Flynn, one of the survivors, seems to have some special ability that can control the robots and he tries to save the world from being colonized. I only have one word for this movie: LAME.
