‘Move to the mountains’ Bangkok governor tells flood complainers

There are no surer signs that someone’s put their foot in their mouth than a raft of instant polls asserting their continued popularity.

That was the case yesterday when state media trotted out a ready-mix report “Bangkok governor still popular among Bangkokians” after Gov. Sukhumbhand Paribatra told the public they should “move to the mountains” if they’re not okay with the occasional inundation.

“Bangkok is on a river and we sometimes have floods,” he said in response to widespread criticism, including chastisement by Gen. Prayuth Chan-ocha. “Move to the mountains if you don’t want to get flooded.”

His comments did not go over well with the public, with people commenting online that it was the equivalent of telling his constituents “to go fuck yourself.”

City officials denied accusations it failed to act in advance of Tuesday’s sudden and powerful storm that unleashed flash floods throughout the city.
