Navy not enthusiastic about Chinese-made subs

A general rule for buying things you want to last is avoiding those with a “Made in China” tag. The same rule should apply to submarines.

Several naval officers have raised concerns about a proposal to purchase Chinese-made submarines, stating the reliability of such might be an issue because China has no experience ever making submarines.

Their objections came after Deputy Prime Ministry Prawit Wongsuwon said he might broker a deal for Thailand to spend THB36 billion on two Chinese subs while he’s there during a three-day visit that began yesterday, Bangkok Post reported.

However officials said no final decision has been made on the navy’s fleet acquisition, which is also evaluating German U-Boats and South Korean submarines as possibilities.
