American expat cleans up after tourists

A retired American surgical assistant who lives in Phetchabun province rides 10 kilometers on his bicycle to pick up garbage that tourists have left behind at Wanghin waterfall every day.

Californian Tim Lamdre, 66, said he decided to move to Sam Elert village in Phetchabun after he was impressed with the weather, quietness of the area and friendliness of the locals when he visited in 1995.

Lamdre said he rides his bicycle to keep fit and he decided to start picking up the trash at the popular tourist destination a year ago because the garbage spoils the waterfall and the broken bottles left behind are dangerous for visitors.

Lamdre said his good deed has been warmly received by the village headman.

Village headman Sanit Chaiwam said Lamdre has a sense of humor and is extremely popular among the villagers. Lamdre gives the garbage he collects to his neighbors so they can sell it, Khaosod reported.
