American envoy to North Korea nominated for ambassador post

Nearly half a year after his former ambassador left the kingdom, US President Barack Obama has nominated a replacement.

Career diplomat Glyn Towsend Davies spent two years as a special envoy to North Korea, according to the US State Department, before being nominated to represent the United States in post-coup Thailand.

Davies’ current title is Senior Advisor in the Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs. Although diplomatic appointments require a largely perfunctory approval from the US Senate, they’ve been held up for months and even years by the American president’s political opponents.

His background and appointment seem in line with a recalibrated American relationship with Thailand following the departure of former ambassador Kristie Kenney in November.

She is now back in Washington D.C. as deputy assistant secretary for public affairs and diplomacy in east asia.

For the time being, Charge d’affaires Patrick Murphy will continue to serve as the top American diplomat at the US Embassy in Bangkok.
