A Vietnam in flux through the eyes of its women

It’s the women of Vietnam Bui Thanh Tam chooses to explore gender, identity and confusion of his society.

Amused and bemused faces of women straddling modernity and tradition stare from the canvases of “There is no Box,” which opens Saturday at Thavibu Gallery on lower Silom Road.

The exhibition captures changing notions and influences of women’s roles in a deeply conservative country.

“The half-hearted communist regime is on its path to change and integrate into the wider world,” the artist said. “This sudden change without orientation makes the human psyche overwhelmed, confused and disoriented. The result is that society often develops conflicts between parts of the Vietnamese culture that are Eastern and parts that have Western influences”

The opening reception starts at 5pm on Saturday, April 25, and runs through May 23.
