Airport taxis to strike after gov pulls plug on fare increase

Airport taxis say they’ll go on strike this weekend after the Transport Ministry shelved an expected second round of fare increases for drivers.

Transportation officials said they were making contingency plans to accomodate travelers through Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport as nearly 2,000 drivers said they will not provide service through Sunday over new rules over how many passengers they must be willing to carry.

Passengers will be directed toward the Airport Rail Link system and free shuttle buses.

Air Chief Marshal Prajin Juntong announced yesterday the ministry he leads would cancel the second scheduled increase to further study the issue over concerns it would harm commuters, according to a report in state media.

A first-round increase went into effect at the beginning of the year after remaining unchanged for two decades despite significant increases in costs for drivers.
