A hit-and-run driver who killed a Bangkok cyclist on Monday night before abandoning his car to flee the scene is being sought by police.

Thanyakorn Densirimongkol died at a hospital several hours after being hit along Ratchada-Ram Intra Road. Two others suffered serious injury.

Police arrived on scene to find the three bicycles and a damaged Honda Jazz. Witnesses said a vehicle was driving erratically behind the cyclists before striking them, losing control and ending up on the road’s center divider. They said a male driver emerged from the vehicle and ran away.

Thanyakorn, 31, was the fifth cyclist killed in a two-day period, according to Bangkok Post. Somnuek Tamboonwai, 63, died Monday in a freak accident when a sign fell on him after it was hit by a truck. On Sunday, a 23-year-old Chiang Mai university student was charged with killing three cyclists while driving drunk.

In response authorities announced yesterday they will extend hours of sobriety checkpoints and urged cyclists using main roads to have a chaser car follow behind them.
