Play and be puzzled by Japan’s mondo bizarro video games

While we in Thailand enjoy a bounty of wonderful weird, we’ve got nothing on the perpetually bizarre curiosities of Japan.

Let your thumbs guide you on a journey through some of the weirdest games to come out of the Land of Rising Fun this Sunday evening when the curator-geeks of 8-Bit Bangkok host “Wierd Japanese Video Games.” (Remember, you can’t spell “weird” without “we.”)

They’re taking suggestions as to what should be in rotation at the public gaming session to be held at Jam, but here’s what’s on the menu so far:

Incredible Crisis

The everyday trials and tribulations of different members of Japanese nuclear family; dodging boulders, saving a UFO from the navy, giving a satisfying massage, dealing with a giant teddy bear and robbing a bank, all for the sake of getting their grandmother a birthday present.

LSD: Dream Emulator

Based on a 10-year dream diary kept by game developer Hiroko Nishikawa. The outcome is an extremely trippy first person explorer game, with no inherent purpose.

Paradious

Konami made a parody version of Gradius, their first side scrolling shoot ’em up. But instead of warplanes and evil monsters there are bathing penguins, octopus, pirate cats, candy and of course scantily clad goddesses.

Bishi Bashi

A collection of inane Japanese game show style mini-games, guaranteeing a smile on your face and less brain cells after playing. It will see you throwing wedding cake into the crowd, catching colored gobstoppers, building a bridge with jelly beans, avoiding getting shot, playing the piano, dancing, fishing and pointing out the girl in the different cosplay outfit.
