Mahidol students set off for France in tuk-tuk powered by the sun

It will be awhile before two French exchange students returning home from Thailand will taste the sweet baguette of their homeland.

Ludwig Merz and Karen Koulakian, part of a collaboration program between Mahidol and Toulouse universities, depart June 10 on a journey that will take them through 16 countries over four months in an electric tuk-tuk to raise awareness about energy use.

“These courses have inspired me and my friends to come up with the Pilgreens Project,” Merz said. “We aim to illustrate that technological advancement can help create clean energy.”

The tuk-tuk has solar panels on the roof and can travel 200 kilometers when fully charged, which takes six to eight hours. The cost of travel is THB0.7 per kilometer or about THB14,000 for the entire trip.

Their journey is expected to run from June 10 – October 10, The Nation reported.
