Bangkok got back to work Monday later than usual as commuters slogged through streets flooded by an epic, overnight storm worthy of a Wagner opera.

Heavy rain pelted the Thai capital for five to six hours starting at about 1:30am this morning, while blasts of thunder cracked the sky. When the rain stopped at about 8am, many roads and buildings were flooded, and traffic was paralyzed, prompting closure of some schools.

Main arteries including Chaeng Wattana, Klong Toei, Lat Phrao, Rama IV, Sukhumvit and Asoke roads were all reported flooded.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration was pumping the water from the streets as commuters arrived work an hour or more late due to road and traffic conditions best described as “really shitty.”

Not to mention many vehicles that drowned in the middle of the street.

According to  Department of Drainage, they expect to completely dry out the roads within hours, Thairath reported.
