For the millionth time, please don’t dump your garbage in city drains, officials beg

Facing more public scorn after Bangkok flooded again, city hall snapped back to tell everyone to please just stop dumping their shit down city drains.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration said today it must remove over 1,000 tons of garbage from city drains every day and called on the public to not leave it piled on the streets.

Secretary-General Sanya Cheenimit was discussing the city’s flood preparedness and response today, saying the capital’s expensive flood diversion system should be capable of handling most rainfall. However, he said an ongoing problem and burden has been the volume of garbage clogging storm drains year after year, especially when sudden rains sweep it all in.

“The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration is collecting at least 1,000 tons of garbage and debris every day,” he said. “During rainy seasons, the amount has increased.” “We’d like to ask citizens for corporations to dump garbage appropriately because our staff alone cannot pick them all up.”

Sanya added garbage was also found in the city’s 166 pumping stations.

He said the most recent giant diversion tunnel is operating and pumping water out of the city into the Chao Phraya river, but can only handle 60 millimeters of rainfall, Post Today reported.
