City declares war on spit, snot and litter

Bangkok’s “No Smoking” signs may soon be joined by even more warnings everyone will just continue to ignore.

Striking an appearance of “cleaning up the city,” officials are threatening to actually enforce decades-old public nuisance laws.

Municipal enforcers in all 50 districts of Bangkok have been ordered to lay down the law on spitters, nose-blowers and litterbugs in public places by fining them the statutory THB2,000.

The rules will be enforced by the city’s tessakit officers, who are well known for loitering in areas without trash bins and demanding THB2,000 for dropped cigarette butts.

Chief tessakit Sophon Photisop said despite the laws being on the books for 20 years, the city is a mess because they’ve never been taken seriously, ThaiPBS reported.
