Korean satire of Thai monks upsets Thais (VIDEO)

Thai hearts fell into shadow this week when the same country responsible for their beloved K-Pop made fun of Thai Buddhist monks on a comedy show.

In a recently broadcast comedy sketch, South Korean comedians made fun of Thais as hyper-religious and Korea-obsessed by taking the stage as Buddhist monks in a sketch widely criticized by Thai netizens after it was posted online.

The monks are presented as dim boobs mindlessly wai-ing their way across the stage, but when the Korean hosts greet them with “Sawasdee Krub” and “Kob Khun Krub,” the monks reply in perfect Korean because, according to unofficial translations, they are K-Pop superfans, according to Bangkok Post.

Later the audiences lose their shit when one of the monks slaps the head of a man posing as a Buddha statue, breaking up his curly Buddha hair which turns out to be made of biscuits.

Not sure what the gag is intended to be here, but many in Thailand were not happy with the visual.

Many Thais expressed their disappointment while tempering it with their admiration for Korean entertainment.

“They are real idiots!!” user “Human Wisdom” wrote. “Thai people used to adore, admire and pursue Korean singers, movies and stars over the past two decades. However the recent idiotic acts of the stage performers mocking Thai Buddhism has sunk the Korean people’s image in the hearts of Thai people!”

One comment in Korean, however, said that South Korea enjoys both freedom of religion and expression.

One Thai commentator pointed out that the freedom of the expression didn’t make it any less stupid.

“They are such a civilized country, but why are they so intellectually challenged?” Pharnupong Deva-auksorn wrote.
