1980s Bangkok more awesome on old video cassette (VIDEO)

The Dusit Thani Hotel provided a high-rise view and Asoke intersection was still a mess.

Take a sentimental stroll through mid-1980s Bangkok to see the city through one traveler’s eyes in a 28-minute video exploration of the gritty city.

Don’t try and adjust the tracking, as there’s some nostalgic feels to seeing the city in grainy VHS-cassette footage – then maybe we’ve watched Kung Fury too many times.

Back in those splendid days of myth and legend, residents survived without the BTS Skytrain and the original Baiyoke’s 43 stories offered the highest view in town, moments cherished in an anonymous YouTuber’s old footage illustrating his memory of visiting Bangkok in 1985, 1987 and 1996, including looks at the Sukhumvit, Asoke, Patpong, Soi Cowboy and riverside areas.

Many things change, something don’t. Fewer cars; same number of bars.
