Crunch on crispy wontons and slurp down Yen Ta Fo at Jae Jia’s

COCONUTS HOT SPOT —  Strolling past the food vendors on any Bangkok street to find classic fried wontons, but to taste the wonton king’s abundant pork fillings, check out Jae Jia’s Yen Ta Fo stall in the Samyan area.

Located in Soi Chomsomboon a 10-minute walk from MRT Sam Yan, Jae Jia’s 40 years of wonton expertise gave us the best taste of crispy dumplings, which are seasoned with spices so you don’t need any sauce. Eat them like chips or have them with a large bowl of her pink Yen Ta Fo noodles (THB40-50), and your main course is completed.

Walailak Chutiwaraporn, Jae Jia’s daughter carrying the torch today, guarantees the wontons are freshly fried daily. Her little restaurant sells at least 20 kilograms of wontons and the fried shrimp balls daily, she said. A bowl of these crispy fried snacks are only THB40.

Just like any stall, Jae Jia’s can customize your noodles, whether you want Yen Ta Fo, Tom Yum or Nam Sai (plain), but all of them are topped off with boiled fish balls and heavy seasoning.

Walailak said it’s become tradition for customers to order a Yen Ta Fo with a bowl of wontons and shrimp balls each. So, when in Samyan, do as the Samyanese do.
