Entrepreneur and politician Somyot Suthangkul gunned down

A former politician and one-time owner of a popular cafe was shot dead outside a restaurant in on Pattanakarn Road last night.

Somyot Suthangkul, best known as the owner of the Rama 9 Plaza, was shot to death in the parking lot of Heng Shark Fin restaurant in the Suan Luang district after he finished a meal with his wife and returned to his car at around 9pm.

Witnesses said they heard three gunshots. Somyot was shot in the head and left shoulder. There was no report of his wife being harmed.

Police are investigating the murder.

In 1995 Somyot opened his entertainment venue, better known as the Rama 9 Cafe, which became a legend in the capital until the tom yum gung crisis. Somyot’s name was frequently in the news and the cafe became famous for a nightly comedy show. He was also a former governor of the Entertainment Operator Association.

After the business died down, Somyot turned to politics. He was a former member of parliament with the Democrat Party and ran a law and accounting firm at the same time, Thairath reported.
