Police today blamed faulty equipment for the death of a 44-year-old tourist who recently fell from a Chiang Mai zip-line.
The unidentified Chinese national was gliding across the zip-line at the popular “Skyline Adventure” when police said a safety lock malfunctioned and caused him to plunge 12 meters to the ground.
A TripAdvisor review posted Sunday suggests the victim initially survived the fall.
“He was severely injured,” a user SouthEastAsia0615 wrote Sunday on TripAdvisor. “The guides didn’t seem prepared to handle this accident, and he was lucky there was a nurse in our group. After 30 minutes they were finally able to take him to the hospital, but had to continue to zip-line him out since we were deep in the jungle.”
A police source told Khaosod English the accident was withheld from the media because authorities did not want any “negative news” to overshadow a visit to Chiang Mai by junta chief Prayuth Chan-ocha, who was set to arrive the next day.
The management of Skyline Adventure has been charged with reckless action causing death. Police are still investigating the incident.
In May a Kuwaiti man fell to his death due to equipment failure at Phuket World Bungy Jump after his ankle strap came off, leading to the demolition of the venue. More than a month later, no one has yet been held legally responsible.
