‘Drunk’ cop on duty identified

A Bangkok cop who was filmed saying he was “mao nid noi” on duty has been identified and brought before police seniors.

After become infamous online, the drunk traffic cop, identified as Jakkawarn Wongchai of Wangthonglang Police Station, reported to Royal Thai Police spokesman Prawut Thawornsiri this afternoon after the video was heavily criticized.

“I’m drunk just a little bit!” Jakkawarn said in the video which circulated yesterday.

Prawut said he has appointed a committee to inspect whether Jakkawarn was actually intoxicated or not, but Jakkawarn’s friends came to his defense, saying he just always sounds drunk.

Somehow they seem to ignore the part where the officer states in no uncertain terms that, yes, he is drunk in the video. And since he’s sober, how would they prove it now?

Prawut said authorities are also reaching out to the person who posted the video for comments, adding posting a video is legal as long as it doesn’t contain a false statement or damage anyone’s reputation, Matichon reported.

Fun fact: Truth is not a defense against libel under Thai law.
