A day after international media quoted him saying Bangkok could run out of tap water in 30 days, the Metropolitan Waterworks Authority governor today completely denied it.

After the story set off alarms, water authority boss Thanasak Watanathana today sought to calm the public by explaining the 30-day warning was only hypothetical and based on current reservoir levels that did not account for future rain.

Which is pretty much what he already said Tuesday.

“Right now, there is only enough water in the dams to distribute for about 30 more days – if it doesn’t rain,” he was quoted in yesterday’s Reuters report.

Seasonal rains are expected in August.

One of the worst droughts in decades is currently a major headache for Thailand. Water levels are critically low in the three key reservoirs that flow into the Chao Phraya River, one of the two main sources of Bangkok’s tap water. Many citizens throughout kingdom have been affected, while subsidence has caused serious damage to a number of roads.
