Don Mueang International Airport’s heightened luggage screening has slowed the normally brisk flow and caused passengers to miss flights during the weekend.
Since Friday when new luggage screening rules were quietly posted to the airport’s website, many unaware travelers were surprised by long lines at check-in.
“As from 17 July 2015, security measure at Don Mueang International Airport is revised. Every piece of baggage both hand-carry and loaded baggage must be -rayed before entering the check-in area. This measure is aimed to prevent the airport from the unlawful interference action that may cause the delay of process. We truly apologize for any inconvenience that may occur,” the statement said.
AirAsia abruptly issued a warning to passengers on Saturday to arrive at the airport 2.5 hours prior to departure time for domestic flights and 3.5 hours for international flights.
No reason was given for the changes, but the security of Thailand’s airports has been a news item since former police commissioner Kamronwit Thoopkrachang was arrested in Japan last month for trying to board a flight back to Bangkok with a gun and bullets in his bag. He said it was his gun, meaning he had flown out of Suvarnabhumi Airport with the weapon.
