Japanese artist to show the delish side of money

Money, money, money must be funny in the artist’s world. Especially when its value is no longer as money but has been reappropriated for art.

Japanese artist Yosuke Hasegawa transforms cash through origami and the folding arts at “Moneylicious” opening Saturday at Tadu Contemporary Art.

The exhibition will feature Hasegawa’s artwork made from banknotes and an interactive video installation by Wittaya Junma.

Hasegawa started folding banknotes “without any particular intention” back in 2006 and found a fold could turn an important figure into a comical one.

The work plays with the transferability and loss of value between a piece of paper and material things such as baseball caps. Moneylicious’ intent is grounded in the context of Bangkok’s Warp factor nine development.

“I have been also confronted by the reality of life in Bangkok, and the art of Moneylicious is certainly opening my new chapters,” Hasegawa wrote. “I wonder if money could create genuine happiness? Or will you make misfortune or tragedy?”

Entry is free. The opening reception starts at 6pm on July 25. The exhibition runs through Sept. 5.
