Three homemade rockets came close to striking a plane piloted from of Air Force’s 46th wing yesterday when they were randomly fired into the sky in central Thailand, despite rocket fest ending weeks ago.

Squadron Leader Apiwat Pholasa and two other officers were on a training mission and had to return to base after coming within 200 meters of the rockets.

Apiwat landed his plane safely and determined the rockets were shot from the Sai Ngam district in Kampaeng Phet province. Speculation is that the rockets might have been part of a local a rain-summoning ceremony.

As Thailand’s rocket festival ended in June, the air unit, who conducts practice flights daily, did not expect to be fired upon, according to Director of Civil Affairs Directorate of Civil Affairs Mana Prasopsri.

Mana added the air force has asked the police to warn locals and ask for three days notice before firing any rockets, MCOT reported.
