Vocational colleges ban students with large ear piercings, restrict those with tattoos

All vocational colleges in and around Bangkok have agreed to reject students with wide ear piercings and those with visible tattoos will be forced to take night courses.

Adisorn Sinprasong, secretary of the Association of Private Technological and Vocational Education Colleges, said new students with large ear piercings will have to restore their ears to normal before starting a course.

The admission policy has been in place for a while by some schools but now all vocational colleges in and around Bangkok will implement it for the next academic year.

The colleges made the agreement to ensure graduates look respectable and to help them gain employment, reported the Nation.

Adisorn is also concerned that students with tattoos or ear-piercings will be an unruly influence on others.

“Young people with large ear-piercings and tattoos are at risk of engaging in antisocial behaviour and violence,” he claimed.

“Many employers, such as official agencies and Japanese firms, do not accept this group to work with them. That is why we have to add this standard to student qualifications.”

Vocational education is typically an option for students looking to continue post-secondary education but can’t get into a full university program.
