After all vocational colleges in Bangkok recently announced a ban on students with large ear piercings and visible tattoos, private colleges have now pledged to consider such students’ applications if they are willing to change (or hide) the undesirable parts of their appearance.
“They will invite these applicants in for a talk and the students may be asked to remove their tattoos or avoid wearing certain types of earrings,” Education Ministry permanent secretary Kamjorn Tatiyakavee said yesterday.
He added the students do not need to remove their tattoos if they are not very visible, and that the applications will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
The Association of Private Technological and Vocational Education Colleges announced its decision last week to reject applicants with tattoos and stretched earlobes after information showed that the students with such features were often engaged in misconduct.
The organization also found that some businesses refused to hire graduates with tattoos and piercings, so not enrolling those applicants in the first place would boost the image of vocational graduates and records, The Nation reports.
