Student who keeps it real in uni beauty pageant discusses ‘being popular’

“Mew Lae Love”, the bold student who is currently dominating her university’s beauty pageant contest by keeping it real, opened up on television about her definition of “popular”.

The freshman of Burapha University, Mew Lae Love or Wannika Prasripa, became famous overnight when her photo for the “Freshman Girl” pageant contest stood out from the dolled up girls because she refused to conform to beauty standards and is fine just the way she is.

The contest is held on the university’s Facebook page,

“To me, stars of the univeristy sacrifice and dedicate themselves to help the public,” she told PPTV “And to many people, it’s so much more than being pretty.”

Freshman pageants are a tradition at Thai universities where each faculty sends their best-looking male and female student to compete. The internet was on fire Monday when Wannika decided to adopt a quirky pose for her photo to show off her personality representing the faculty of Fine and Applied Arts.

The popular vote contest is judged by the number of likes each contestant receives on Facebook. Wannika has over 250,000 votes, compared to other girls who have less than 100,000 votes.

“I’m not pretty at all,” Mew Lae Love said. “I got here because of my talents and people completely overlook my appearance.”

Mew Lao Love, who is known for her sense of humor, has won many provincial contests such as dancing, singing and starring in a play.
