Ratchayothin flyover to be demolished, tunnel to be built

The State Railway of Thailand decided Saturday it will demolish the bridge that crosses Ratchayothin junction to make way for an extension of the BTS green line.

After approval was granted to demolish Kasetsart flyover on Wednesday, officials went back on their word about Ratchayothin flyover and they will now build a tunnel to solve the traffic problems on Ratchadaphisek.

The original plan was to lift the BTS platform two meters higher so the line goes over the bridge.

The tunnel is expected to be completed in three years.

Officials plan to demolish Ratchayothin flyover around October after the demolition of Kasetsart flyover is complete.

The Kasetsart flyover will be closed for demolition from 10pm on Saturday, Daily News reported.

The BTS green line will extend from Mo Chit terminal to Pathumthani. The 19-kilometer-long rail route will have 16 stations and is expected to open in 2020.
