Over 30,000 cyclists participated in Bangkok Car Free Day yesterday to campaign for Bangkokians to ride bicycles and use public transportation instead of their cars.
Bangkok governor M.R. Sukhumbhand Paribatra launched “Bangkok Car Free Day 2015” at Sanam Luang in another effort to reduce the number of cars in the capital.
The event is held annually by the BMA in cooperation with 70 networking organizations to encourage Bangkokians to change their commuting habits from using personal cars to public transportation, which nowadays link with railways and water routes.
At this year’s Bangkok Car Free Day, the cyclists began their 8-kilometer-long journey around Rattanakosin Island from Wat Phra That, passing through Bangkok National Museum, Phra Athit Road, Ratchadamnoen Klang Road, Democracy Monument roundabout, Tanao Road, Bamrung Muang Road, Sanam Chai Road, the Grand Palace, the Temple of the Emerald Buddha before concluding their journey at Sanam Luang.
Along the route from the Grand Palace to Wat Phra That, officials held several activities such as free health check-ups, occupational training, distribution of tree saplings, an extreme cycling show and mini concerts by celebrity artists.
Booths selling a wide range of products from food to bicycles were also erected along the route, state media reported.
