5 children murdered by mentally-ill neighbor in Chiang Mai

Five boys aged five to ten years old were stabbed to death by their mentally-ill neighbor in Chiang Mai Saturday.

Their pregnant guardian survived with a severe cut in her face.

Locals of Chaiprakarn district seized and beat the killer, Asapa Siwua, 24, before handing him over to police after he went on rampage and slaughtered the five children who were playing next door to his house.

According to the investigation, Asapa, who is from the Lisu hill tribe, used a large knife to stab the first child he saw before chasing the others into the house and killing them. He brutally slashed Yikor Sachen, 33, the seven-month pregnant guardian, on her face as she tried to rescue the children.

Four boys died at the scene. One died later at the hospital.

Two other children from the neighborhood who came to play with the victims were able to escape.

The house where the horrific murder took place is reportedly owned by a senior woman who cared for her two grandsons, but as she was sick and had to stay in the hospital, her relative Yikor, stepped in to care for the two boys and bringing three of her own children to live at the house.

The children reportedly ran around the house and made noises, as children do.

Police said that Asapa, who had just been released from Suanprung Psychiatric Hospital on Aug. 8, driven to the rampage by the noise of the children.

Asapa was severely beaten by the locals before he was handed over to authorities. He was admitted to Fang Hospital under police close supervision.

Police will question Asapa when he recovers, Thairath and Daily News reported.
