Officers deployed after suspicious backpacker wanders into Military Court during retirement party

A man, who was later assumed to be a tourist looking for a bathroom, caused panic at the  Bangkok Military Court on Saturday when he was caught on CCTV wandering around different floors.

Explosive Ordnance Disposal officers were deployed to search every floor inside the court after CCTV footage from Friday showed a suspicious man with a backpack wandering on different floors inside the court.

It was the same day when Adem Karadag and Yusufu Mieraili, the two men police hold as responsible Bangkok bombing, arrived at the Military Court jail.

Thankfully no explosions happened, but the CCTV reportedly showed a man with a backpack visiting the court on Friday. He reportedly walked straight to the elevator and went up to the rooftop before he was seen walking around the fourth and then third floor.

After that, he went down the first floor and left after spending about 8-10 minutes in the building.

For safety, Deputy Judge Advocate General Krisda Charoenpanich said EOD officers were called to inspect all floors, but he later assumed the man was just a tourist looking for a toilet.

“We were not sure what the situation was and could not identify if he was a foreigner or not. He could be a tourist because the court is open for public, and many people stop by to use the bathroom,” Krisada said.

Krisada added the building usually had high security measures, but the court was chaotic Friday as people were setting up a retirement party, Bangkok Biz News reported.

“The man walked in when there were staff carrying musical instruments and food for the retirement party,” he said.
