War of Freedom: ICT website down after anti-single gateway group starts DDoS attack

The official website of Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) was down from 7pm last night, three hours before a scheduled DDos attack by netizens. The website showed the message “404 page not found.”

The campaign, initiated by Facebook page “Gamers taking power back”, encouraged users to perform the DDoS attack by entering the ICT website at 10pm and hitting the refresh button repeatedly until the site goes down. The instruction was posted online yesterday.

ICT deputy secretary-general Somsak Kaosuwat said this morning the website was inaccessible because many people attempted to access it at the same time causing temporary server problems.

However, he denied it had anything to do with the anti-single gateway operation.

Yeah, right. Because everyone was curious about the establishment of ICT and wanted to access a government’s website at the same time?

Meanwhile, government spokesman Sansern Kaewkamnert told Nation TV that the single-gateway concept is still being studied, and the government hasn’t started the process yet.

He added that it doesn’t intend to violate rights of citizens, only to support the digital economy.

His statement contradicts with the report from the cabinet meeting on Sept. 19 which stated “The single gateway will be a tool to control inappropriate websites and the inbound of information and news from overseas to Thailand.”
