Determined Norwegian bird-enthusiasts flock back to treacherous mud pit

The elderly Norwegian birdwatching couple now famous around the world was spotted right back in the mud just days after being rescued from the same place by an honorable Krabi fisherman.

But this time the husband stood within the safety of an upside-down bucket to prevent being sucked down to his doom, as he took photos of bird life in the marsh.

Krabi mayor Keeratisak Phukaoluan posted the photo on Facebook Sunday admiring the two tourists for their smart bucket method and their passion for birdwatching in Krabi.

“They use buckets to hold themselves in the mud. This is such a simple wisdom that some of us cannot think of. They will be in Krabi for two more weeks. Greet them if you see them.” Keeratisak wrote.

The couple was previously saved by a selfless fisherman, 44-year-old Chat Ubonchinda who literally lied face down in the mud, allowing the elderly tourists to climb out of the goo on his back. The video of his rescue went viral worldwide, restoring a semblance of faith in the humanity.

Chat’s heroic move was lauded by the Tourism Council of Thailand and he was given an honorary certificate, THB10,000 cash, and some spa vouchers for his good deed yesterday.

After his muddy rescue, we’re sure a good spa treatment is just what Khun Chat needs right now.
