Belgian tourist rescued after drifting in sea for 5 hours

A Belgian tourist was rescued by a fishing boat after drifting in the water for over five hours between Koh Samui and Koh Phangan yesterday.

Brigit Haeceman, a 26-year-old veterinarian, was rescued by a Rayong fishing boat after she was found waving for help in the sea about 6pm yesterday.

Exhausted Brigit was given dry clothes, bread and an Ovaltine drink by Nantapong Khacha-art, the boat’s owner, who also contacted the Samui authorities. Nantapong took her to the hospital when the boat reached Nathon Pier.

The tourist said she traveled to the Full Moon party on Koh Phangan with her boyfriend from Belgium on Wednesday night, but they had an argument in the morning and her boyfriend left and flew home.

Brigit then decided to go out on on a kayak, but when she jumped into the water for a swim she realised it was too rough and she couldn’t get back to her kayak.

Tourist police will contact the Belgian Embassy to help her get a flight home, Morning News reported.
